AKANIMO - I want to know if the holy ghost departs from one or we depart from the holy ghost or both can happen? Also is conscience same as light of christ?

JOEL - Once we have been give the "Gift of the Holy Ghost", He will never leave us unless we push Him away by our disobedience and sin. Whether we leave Him or He leaves us maks no real difference. The results are the same. We are left without His power and influence.

The prophet Amulek said:
"For behold, if ye have procrastinated the day of your repentance even until death, behold, ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he doth seal you his; therefore, the Spirit of the Lord hath withdrawn from you, and hath no place in you, and the devil hath all power over you; and this is the final state of the wicked." (Alma 34:33)

"When we undertake to cover our sins, or to gratify our pride, our vain ambition, or to exercise control or dominion or compulsion upon the souls of the children of men, in any degree of unrighteousness, behold, the heavens withdraw themselves; the Spirit of the Lord is grieved; and when it is withdrawn, Amen to the priesthood or the authority of that man. (D&C 121:37)

So because of our sins the Holy Ghost can withdraw from us, but He stays close by so He will be there for us as we go through the repentance process.

The "Light of Christ" (Moroni 7:16-18, D&C 84: 45-46) has been described as our conscience, which everyone has, that gives us the inborn awareness of what is right and wrong.

President Joseph Fielding Smith said:
"The Light of Christ acts as our conscience. If a man who has never heard the gospel will hearken to the teachings and manifestations of the Spirit of Christ, or the Light of Truth, which come to him, often spoken of as conscience-every man has a conscience and knows more or less when he does wrong, and the Spirit guides him if he will hearken to its whisperings-it will lead him eventually to the fullness of the gospel. That is, he is guided by the Light, and when the gospel comes he will be ready to receive it." (Doctrines of Salvation)
