ALEX - A lot of Leviticus is no longer followed, but why did God hold on to Leviticus 18:22 as a law?

JOEL - Leviticus contains some of the laws of Moses which were fulfilled when Christ came to earth (3 Ne. 9:17), so we don't live by most of them anymore. There were some of them, however, that were carried over after Christ introduced His Gospel and Lev. 18:22 is one of them.

"Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination."

By the way the following scripture is also still in effect for obvious reasons:
Verse 23 "Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith:"

The following scriptures show that Jesus also supported this law when He was here as reflected by some of the things his Apostles said:

And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly,(Rom. 1:27)
Abusers of themselves with mankind will not inherit the kingdom of God, (1 Cor. 6:9–10)
The law is not made for a righteous man, but for them that defile themselves with mankind, (1 Tim. 1:9–10)
Those who go after strange flesh are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire, (Jude 1:7)

And of course it is also reflected in what His prophets have said today:
THE FIRST COMMANDMENT that God gave to Adam and Eve pertained to their potential for parenthood as husband and wife. We declare that God’s commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force. We further declare that God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife.(The Family: A Proclamation to the World)

One of the main commandments that God gave Adam and Eve, and us today as we learn in the temple, is that as husbands and wives we are to "multiply and replenish the earth".(Gen 1: 28) This is an eternal law that carries on into the next life under the everlasting covenant of marriage.
Same sex couples can not multiply and therefore can not obtain eternal life in the Celestial Kingdom, although they can be saved in another level of heaven. That's one of the main reasons why God commanded us to continue to live that law today. Marriage between a man and a woman was instituted by God and is central to His plan for His children and for the well-being of society.
People who never marry in this life or are unable to have children can have these opportunities in the next life during the millennium and can then multiply.
