CHARLES - Why does the Church allow divorce and remarriage in light of what Jesus said in the following scripture where He says it is not allowed:

"And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her.
And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery." (Mark 10:11-12)

JOEL - The Lord did make one exception to this rule. In Matthew He said: "And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. (Matthew 19: 9)

So the Savior taught divorce and remarriage is permissible as long as the divorce action of a faithful spouse is precipitated by the disloyalty of a cheating spouse.

Besides this exception a few scriptures before the ones you quoted Jesus also said:
"And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away. And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept."(Mark 10: 4-5)

In a perfect world Jesus would not want anyone to get divorced, but there were and are times, as in the time of Moses, where divorce is allowed because of the "hardness of your hearts".
Unfortunately in our day some members do not abide by the law of the gospel in its fullness, and so, as in the day of Moses, God has allowed divorce, when deemed necessary, although it was never intended to be. This same reasoning might explain the suspension of living the Law of Consecration that was tried in the early Church years.

Jesus also said to His disciples:
"And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."(Matt 16: 19)

Suggesting that it might be possible that divorce and remarriage can be allowed within the laws of God if He approves it through His Apostles on earth.
