FLOR - I always wonder why not all the apostles present and seated next to each other during conferences? Been hearing reasons from other members that it is for security reason so that if ever something happened during conferences there are at least 2 people holdimg the keys of the kingdom and kept in a safe and secret place. But this reason doesn't suffice me at all because the seventys also held the same keys as the apostles accdg to Doctrine and covenants. Can u shed some light on this matter?
JOEL You are right that the seventy could take the lead if all the Apostles were to be killed at once. According to the D&C:
The twelve traveling councilors are called to be the Twelve Apostles, or special witnesses of the name of Christ in all the world—thus differing from other officers in the church in the duties of their calling.
And they form a quorum, equal in authority and power to the three presidents previously mentioned.
The Seventy are also called to preach the gospel, and to be especial witnesses unto the Gentiles and in all the world—thus differing from other officers in the church in the duties of their calling.
And they form a quorum, equal in authority to that of the Twelve special witnesses or Apostles just named.(D&C 107: 23-26).
But then again what are the chances of them all dying together at a conference session or anywhere?
I have also heard people use the security reason for why they are not all there at the same time. However, I have seen some conference sessions when they were all there.
Here they are all together at confrence during the sustaining of church officers:
At every Conference time there are members of the Seventy, and sometimes Apostles, that are either out of the country on some assignment, or are presiding over the conference in the old tabernacle building or assembly hall, or they might not be there simply due to illness. These are some of the reasons they might not all be there together.
As long as someone holding the Melchizedek priesthood is still living on the earth, even an Elder could get things started again if needed. That's what Joseph Smith along with Oliver Cowdery did. And if needed God would again provide any other needed instruction or authority to do it.
