JEREMY - Why is the current prophet so focused on the name of the church. The arguments he's making for why this is important seem shallow when compared to challenging issues facing our world and the church in general. The idea of a God that cares about labels and names more than other seemingly much more important priorities, like poverty, slavery, abuse, is concerning to me theologically speaking. The prophet should focus on real issues that help this world and not name changes and labels.

JOEL - So I take it you haven't been paying attention to other things he does and says or listening to General Conference, right?
This name thing only seems bigger because it is something different and because members and people and the media have been making a big thing out of it. He focuses on a lot of things, including the ones on your list, that we just don't hear much about unless we are paying attention.
This is a correction that is a long time coming. It is the command of the Lord. It was the Savior Himself who said, “For thus shall my church be called in the last days, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” (D&C 115: 4)

At the time He visited He said:
“Ye shall call the church in my name. … “And how be it my church save it be called in my name? For if a church be called in Moses’ name then it be Moses’ church; or if it be called in the name of a man then it be the church of a man; but if it be called in my name then it is my church.” (3 Nephi 27: 7-8)

Thus, the name of the Church is not negotiable. When the Savior clearly states what the name of His Church should be and even precede His declaration with, “Thus shall my church be called,” He is serious. And if we allow nicknames to be used or adopt or even sponsor those nicknames ourselves, He is offended. President Nelson is simply trying to steer us and the world back to following what the Lord commanded centuries ago. If we sustain him as a prophet then we have to realize that this is important to God. He gave this promise if we do this:

"My dear brothers and sisters, I promise you that if we will do our best to restore the correct name of the Lord’s Church, He whose Church this is will pour down His power and blessings upon the heads of the Latter-day Saints, the likes of which we have never seen. We will have the knowledge and power of God to help us take the blessings of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people and to prepare the world for the Second Coming of the Lord." (October 2018)
