MOBIO - What is the church's teachings or stand about the so-called "THE LAW OF ATTRACTION''?

JOEL - There is no scientific basis for the concept known as the Law of Attraction, a concept made popular by the movie "The Secret", nor is there any support for it found in the scriptures or Gospel of Jesus Christ. I know of no General authority who has ever made mention of this secular belief.

The Law of Attraction, known to be associated with the occult, has a few basic steps:
Know what you want and ask the universe for it.
Feel and behave as if the object of your desire is on its way.
Be open to receiving it.

What is wanted could be either good things or bad things for yourself or someone else. There are no attempts to involve God in the process; no need to be worthy to receive what is wanted; and no consideration as to whether what we want is good for us.

There is of course some similarity in this concept and the principle of prayer and faith:
We ask God for what we need
We have faith that God will answer our prayers
We prepare ourselves to receive and act on the answer to our prayer.

It is a similar process, but responsibility for our actions and the power and will of God are recognized and involved. With the doctrines of Jesus Christ and the influence of His holy spirit, there is no need for the so called "Law of Attraction", nor is there any need to try and mesh the two together to achieve the desired purpose. We have been taught in the Temple and elsewhere that philosophies of men, such as the law of attraction, should not mingle with the scriptures. All we are told is:

“And again, the elders, priests and teachers of this church shall teach the principles of my gospel, which are in the Bible and the Book of Mormon, in the which is the fulness of the gospel.” (D&C 42:12.)

There is nothing wrong with wanting what's good for us and having a positive mental attitude towards acheiving it, but we must do it by prayer, faith, and our own persistant efforts, acknowledging our full dependence on God for all that we have and receive..
