RICHARD - I believe Porter Rockwell was the Body Guard to Joseph Smith. Is there any evidence that he shot or killed any man to protect the prophet ?

JOEL - Although he was known to have killed a few people in his lifetime I do not know of any instances when he did so as the body guard of Joseph Smith. In 1842 Porter Rockwell was accused and arrested(but not convicted) for the attempted assaination of Missouri Governor Lilburn W. Boggs, who issued the extermination order against the saints. Boggs survived the shooting. (History of the Church V.5 P. 67, 86)

It appears Porter was responsible for killing a man named Frank A. Worrell, who had supervised the guard at the Carthage Jail on the day of Joseph Smith's death. But this happened after Joseph's death and it was ruled as an act of self-defense against a mob, that included Worrell, that was out to kill a sherriff who asked Porter to defend him.(History of the Church V.7 p. 446)
