RICHARD - I think I have heard a scripture which says: 'The sabbath was made for man & not man for the Sabbath'. Could you elaborate the meaning of this scripture?

JOEL - Jesus said:

"The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:" (Mark 2: 27)

Jesus said this in response to the Pharisies accusation, that plucking ears of corn violates the no work on the Sabbath law, as they interpreted it (Neh.13: 15-22).
But Jesus wanted to teach the spirit of the Sabbath day law, and did not feel obligated to follow the strict letter-of-the-law traditions of the elders of the Jews.
He was trying to make a point that man's life should not be so controled by one particular day of the week. We should keep the Sabbath day holy but not to the point that our lives are made miserable in doing so.
We should do that which is good on the Sabbath day(Luke 6:9) for ourselves and for others and sometimes work if it is vital to our lives. Jesus said:

"Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day? (Luke 14:5)

Of course this assumes that you didn't spend all day Saturday putting him into the pit :-)
And the Sabbath is of course a chance for us to worship God and spiritually renew ourselves:

"And that thou mayest more fully keep thyself unspotted from the world, thou shalt go to the house of prayer and offer up thy sacraments upon my holy day;
For verily this is a day appointed unto you to rest from your labors, and to pay thy devotions unto the Most High;
Nevertheless thy vows shall be offered up in righteousness on all days and at all times;
But remember that on this, the Lord’s day, thou shalt offer thine oblations and thy sacraments unto the Most High, confessing thy sins unto thy brethren, and before the Lord.
And on this day thou shalt do none other thing, only let thy food be prepared with singleness of heart that thy fasting may be perfect, or, in other words, that thy joy may be full.” (D&C 59:9-13.)

The physical and spiritual benefits and blessings we receive by proper Sabbath day observance is evidence that the Sabbath really is made for man.
