TANYA - When the Lord gave JS the WOW I know it was not yet a commandment and I've heard he did that so the people could get use to going without hot drinks, liquor, smokes, etc, but being God he already knew how bad these substances were for everyone why did he not make it a commandmanet immediately? God knows everything and he KNEW we would not abide by it unless he made it a commandment, so why did he wait?

JOEL - I don't know. The next time I see Him I will ask Him :-)
I only know what He has told us in the scriptures. The Lord has said that His word comes to man "precept upon precept; line upon line; here a little, and there a little; (Isaiah 28:13)

Paul explained: "I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able." (1 Cor. 3:2)
This idea even applied to the Apostles as Jesus explained, "I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now." (John 16:12)
A scripture in The Book of Mormon says;
"For behold, thus saith the Lord God: I will give unto the children of men line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little; and blessed are those who hearken unto my precepts, and lend an ear unto my counsel, for they shall learn wisdom; for unto him that receiveth I will give more;" (2 Nephi 28:30)
The living of the Word of Wisdom is more than just a health code; it is God's way of seeing if we will live His commandments. As we prove to him that we can live the ones he has given us, he will give us more and will reveal more knowledge to us about him. I suppose according to His judgment we were not ready to receive the WOW as a commandment until the time He gave it to us.
