TWIGGY - In the Book of Alma 18:35 and 22:9-11, we learn that the Holy Ghost dwells in all and created all. Doesn't this go against Latter-day Saint teaching that the Holy Ghost can only dwell at one place at a time and its only His influence that is universal?

JOEL -
"Ammon said unto him: I am a man; and man in the beginning was created after the image of God, and I am called by his Holy Spirit to teach these things unto this people, that they may be brought to a knowledge of that which is just and true;
And a portion of that Spirit dwelleth in me, which giveth me knowledge, and also power according to my faith and desires which are in God." (Alma 18: 34-35)

The personage of the Holy Ghost can only be in one place at a time, but Ammon is not talking about wanting a part of the Holy Ghost in him. If that were so which part would he want. A finger? A toe? His ear?. It is just a figure of speech saying that he would like to have some of the spiritual influence of the Holy Spirit in Him.

"And the king said: Is God that Great Spirit that brought our fathers out of the land of Jerusalem?
And Aaron said unto him: Yea, he is that Great Spirit, and he created all things both in heaven and in earth. Believest thou this?
And he said: Yea, I believe that the Great Spirit created all things, and I desire that ye should tell me concerning all these things, and I will abelieve thy words." (Alma 22:9-11)

Aaron was not talking about the Holy Ghost here. The "Great Spirit" spoken of here was Jesus Christ, who at this time was still in a spirit form because he had not yet come to earth. Jesus was the creator of all things.

TWIGGY - Why does Moroni 6:1 go against the modern Latter-day Saint practices, as Moroni claims these people held the offices and _then_ were baptized.
Moroni 6:1 has people who apparently had the priesthood by present day Mormon Church teachings, in the offices being mentioned, being baptized. In the present day LDS Church, men must be baptized before receiving a priesthood and an office in it.

JOEL -
"And now I speak concerning baptism. Behold, elders, priests, and teachers were baptized; and they were not baptized save they brought forth fruit meet that they were worthy of it." (Moroni 6:1)

It depends on how you read this scripture. To me it is just saying that those who were elders, teachers, and priests, were members who had been baptized before obtaining those offices.
If it meant they were baptized after becoming officers it just means that they might have engaged in the practice of re-baptism.
This was done in the early days of the restored church also for members who wanted to renew their commitment to the church.
In 1840 Brigham Young claimed that a revelation came to Joseph Smith confirming that "the Saints could be baptized and re-baptized when they chose." (Journal of Discourses 18:241, 23 June 1876)

TWIGGY - Are not the conditions to partake of grace in Moroni 10:32 impossible, as it commands us to deny ALL ungodliness, something which is nearly impossible?

JOEL - In general, this condition of "ungodliness" is related less to obeying particular commandments than it is to one's fundamental spiritual character, such as "meekness and lowliness of heart." (Moro. 8: 26)
Moroni is simply encouraging us to develope and maintain this kind of character. It doesn't mean we have to be completely sinless, only that it should be our nature to not sin.

TWIGGY - How come the temple in D&C 115 failed to have been erected?

JOEL - This was not a prophesy that did not come true; it was a command given by God to build a temple. They simply did not obey the command or couldn't obey it because the Saints were driven out of the place before they could build it. Perhaps someday one will be built there.

TWIGGY - Isn't D&C 121:9 a false prophecy as Joseph Smith's friends did indeed turn their back on him and some were responsible for his death?

JOEL -
"Thy friends do stand by thee, and they shall hail thee again with warm hearts and friendly hands." (D&C 121:9)

I don't see how this is a false prophesy. Some people turned against him but there were many more friends who supported him. It didn't say "all" his friends would stand by him. I would submit that those who did turn against him were not really his true friends.

TWIGGY - There are those who contend that the priesthood of Melchizedek can be occupied by mortal men. This notion presents a great misunderstanding of the nature of the office. In Hebrews, the salient point made concerning Jesus' priesthood in the order of Melchizedek was that it was on the power of an indestructible life (Heb. 7:16). The fact that men who occupied the Levitical priesthood could not continue because of death was noted as a short-coming. They could pray for Israel, but their prayers were cut short by death. Jesus, as noted above, lives forever to offer intercession for His own. Why then, are LDS males ordained to the Melchizedek Priesthood?

JOEL - Because Christ's death and resurection made it possible for us to live forever too. We are all eternal souls.

TWIGGY - How come God commanded Polygamy while there are many revelations commanding LDS to obey laws of the land in the Doctrine and Covenants, even though polygamy was illegal at that time?

JOEL - That is precisley one of the main reasons why the practice of polygamy was discontinued; because it was against the laws of the land.
They were slow to follow the law because at the time the doctrine was announced to the membership of the church in 1852, Orson Pratt explained, "the constitution gives the privilege to all the inhabitants of this country, of the free exercise of their religious notions, and the freedom of their faith, and the practice of it."
In their opinion this included the practice of plural marriage, and an Illinois state law, prohibiting multiple marriages, was in their opinion in direct conflict with the Constitution. At the time there were no federal laws against it, until in 1862 when Abraham Lincoln signed the Morrill Bill, which was the first federal law against polygamy. As soon as it was obvious that they would never be able to legally continue it, the Lord brought an end to it.

TWIGGY - During Jesus' ministry He spoke of His church as something in the future. Matthew 16:18 "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."
After Christ's resurrection and the day of Pentecost we read "And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved." (Acts 2:47)
However, the Book of Mormon claims the Christian church was established as early as 147 B.C.
Mosiah 18:17 "And they were called the church of God, or the church of Christ, from that time forward." Why the contradiction?

JOEL - In the New Testament Jesus was simply talking about the establishment of his church to those He was talking to on that part of the earth.

The Mosiah scripture says:
"And they were called the church of God, or the church of Christ, from that time forward. And it came to pass that whosoever was baptized by the power and authority of God was added to his church." (Mosiah 18:17)

Notice it says they were "called" the Church of God, or the Church of Christ. They did not actually have Christ's church yet. They decided to call it that themselves because they already knew through the prophets about His gospel, and since they did have some priesthood authority, wanted to form some kind of organization where they could worship Him. When they were baptized they were not baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and so did not actually have a Church of Jesus Christ until He appeared to them and organized it Himself. (3 Nephi 26:21 and 3 Nephi 27)

TWIGGY - The law of the circulation of the blood was first discovered by Harvey about the year 1619, A.D., and the fact that the skin has "pores" could not have been known in the very nature of the case until after the invention of the microscope. How come, then, King Benjamin knew of pores -
"And lo, He (the Lord Jesus Christ) shall suffer temptations, and pain of body, hunger, thirst and fatigue, even more than man can suffer, except it be unto death; for behold, blood cometh from every pore, so great shall be His anguish"?

JOEL - I don't understand your reasoning. Perhaps they didn't actually call them pores during king Benjamin's time, but they were certainly aware that sweat comes through their skin by some mode. When Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon he simply used a modern day word that would be understood by nineteenth century readers to describe what happened.

TWIGGY - How could Ether have told the ancient Jaredites of the New Jerusalem when they would have known nothing of the Old, let alone the New?

JOEL -
"Behold, Ether saw the days of Christ, and he spake concerning a New Jerusalem upon this land. And he spake also concerning the house of Israel, and the Jerusalem from whence Lehi should come—" (Ether 13:4-5)

Ether was a prophet and as such was able by revelation from God to see both future Jerusalems.
